We only have a few chapters left in Fever 1793. Next week we'll finish the novel, have a final short comprehension quiz, and then start designing our essays.
On Monday we are also going to start learning about the Renaissance in Social Studies. Homework: Novel Study Tracking Sheets should be complete up to the end of chapter 25. Upcoming learning for Language Arts and Social Studies: the format of a debate, the structure of a Pecha Kucha presentation.

We continued reading Fever 1793 today. We worked in small groups and as a whole class to share ideas for information that we could put in our tracking sheets. Reminder: these tracking sheets will be very helpful when you start constructing your essay.
HOMEWORK: Tracking sheets should be completed up to chapter 20. Reminder: if you'd like to review the book outside of class, it is available as a pdf here. After catching up on our long weekends and vacations, we had a short comprehension quiz from Fever 1793 and completed our Daily 5 activities. We had a student teacher in the class with us today who continued reading Fever. I'm hoping we can push through with Fever this week and finish it and then start our essay next week.
We also reviewed the election results, both the actual results and our school results. Grade 8 students shared their country of origin and shared a little bit of information about it. We made a map to celebrate where we all come from.
Students took notes on types of questions. We organized them into types of questions asked by:
We read chapters 14 & 15 of Fever 1793 and discussed some of the characters, setting, and imagery. On Tuesday, after the long weekend, we will have a short comprehension quiz on chapter 11-15. All Mount Royal students cast their votes today for the municipal election as part of studentvote.ca. After our Daily 5 activities today, we continued reading our novel, Fever 1793. We have been stopping to discuss themes, symbolism, and literary devices.
We continued researching the positions of various mayoral candidates. HOMEWORK: Choose one topic that is important to you, research online to learn about the mayoral candidates' position on your issue. You can use this knowledge tomorrow when we hold our school-wide vote in the Learning Commons! In Social Studies, students brainstormed who they thought was running for Mayor of Calgary and what the candidate's various platforms were. After we exercised what we already knew, we used the list of candidates for a pre-vote. We'll learn about the municipal issues and candidate's views on those issues. We'll vote again on Friday as part of studentvote.ca.
In English Language Arts, some students were struggling to complete their novel study tracking sheet independently. We filled out the second sheet together and I collected the sheets to ensure students were on the right track. Some students might still have a couple of outstanding small assignments: Worldview Collage First and second tracking sheet If you haven't handed these in, please do this week. Hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving! Students who stayed at school yesterday were able to take part in the SAIT field trip. Students who stayed back today watched a film and made connections to story structure, theme, foreshadowing. Students also connected ideas from the film to the concept of worldview - a topic that will direct our Social Studies classes this year.
Tomorrow students will follow the schedule they copied from the board a couple weeks ago. 8A starts the day with Mr. Kurcwal 8B starts the day with me, Mr. Spencer 8C starts the day with Mrs. Teasdale Our grade 8 students were engaged, polite, hard working, and collaborative at our SAIT Field Trip today. We are repeating this trip with the 2nd half of grade 8 students tomorrow. I'm looking forward to it!
Students who were not on the field trip watched a film and made connections to story structure, theme, foreshadowing. Students also connected ideas from the film to the concept of worldview - a topic that will direct our Social Studies classes this year. After our Daily 5 activities, we went over expectations for our field trip (tomorrow and Thursday). If there are any parent volunteers who are able to join us on either day, please email me at [email protected] this evening.
Students prepared and delivered a brief presentation of their worldview collages. We followed up these presentations with a quick debrief of yesterday's debate video. |
